Going it alone. 5 tips to bear in mind.

A new year is underway and perhaps, along with other resolutions befitting the season, you’ve thought about making a change in your professional life. Perhaps there’s an idea or project you’ve been turning over in your mind. Perhaps you feel that it’s time to show your true professional worth, to work independently, manage your own time and be your own boss. The point is that you’ve decided to join the world of freelance professionals, to join the world of entrepreneurs.

In light of that decision, allow me to share five tips with you:

  1. The final objective isn’t the most important point. You’re about to set out on a long-distance race. What really counts are the stages. Each step, each triumph, each failure can make your final objective change.
  2. What do you do? When someone asks you this question, what they’re really saying is “Do I need to know you?” No one cares about what you do. What’s significant for people is to discover if you might be of help, if they might need you. This means that you should define as clearly and precisely as possible exactly what problem it is that you solve.
  3. Emotion is your most valuable weapon. How does your client feel? How did they feel before they met you and how will they feel once they’ve got to know you? Remember: problem + emotion = solution + emotion.
  4. Sell. Sometimes we get so involved in improving and improving our product or service that we forget to sell. But you’ll learn the most by selling. It’s tough to sell; we don’t know how to do it. Selling means generating income but it’s also about evolving, growing, learning and changing. Your client is your boss; they’ll let you know if you’re on the right track.
  5. Believe in yourself. If you believe in yourself and in what you do, then others will believe too. Your client will believe. Don’t get obsessed with results, but give the very best of yourself. Attitude is another great tool that will be of enormous help. Work on your attitude.Welcome to your new life as an entrepreneur.
